"My journey began back in 2011. I had always used the gym for general fitness but didn’t really have a specific direction. I had gained some weight and was feeling unhappy with myself and knew that I needed to do something about it, so I began running on a regular basis.
Initially, I really struggled and had to stop several times within the first mile. However, I stuck to my routine and found that the better I got, the more confidence I had and the better I felt.
After a while I felt that I had gotten as good as I could do on my own and joined Ripley Running Club as I knew that a structured approach to my training would be the best way to improve. I also liked the idea of being able to be part of a team and enter events and races. I also thought it would be an advantage to surround myself with “like minded” people and draw on their knowledge.
In 2014 I joined the Alfreton centre and started doing some strength and conditioning work to support my running and whilst using the gym I spent time speaking to people about the things they train for which then led me to start looking at new goals to work towards.
All the training I currently do is geared towards endurance-based exercise and it has given me the ability to complete the Snowdon and London Marathons as well as numerous Half Marathons. I currently follow a Wattbike training programme which is hard work, but well worth it as I intend to enter some Sportive rides next year as my new focus.
I personally find that exercise helps me to stay fit and healthy and gives me mental focus. I also enjoy the social aspect of coming to the gym and I feel that it is a fantastic way to spend your time and I always strive to improve."
